The Perrysburg Board of Education Monday hired an educator from the Maumee School District as its new executive director of pupil services.

Dwight Fertig, 41 of Eastwood, who is currently the director of curriculum and technology for Maumee Schools,  was granted a two-year contract with Perrysburg that begins Aug. 1. He will be paid $99,900 annually. The board's approval was unanimous.

At last month's Perrysburg Board of Education meeting, the board hired Brook Price as the Woodland Elementary principal next year, creating an opening for the position.

"It is a vital position that calls upon someone with a unique set of skills to work with our special, fragile students to provide them with the services that they need, as well as our gifted students and helping them advance," Perrysburg Superintendent Tom Hosler said. "With this position's importance I was nervous about making a hire, but when the applications came in there was one name we were all very interested in."

Before becoming the director of curriculum and technology in Maumee - a position Mr. Hosler said is very similar to the Perrysburg opening - Mr. Fertig was the director of student services and special education and technology at Maumee. He also previously served as principal at Fort Miami Elementary in Maumee.

"I've worked with many people from Perrysburg and I've seen how hard they work," Mr. Fertig said. "I'm excited to help fill in and get students to their maximum potential."

In other news:

The board hired 23 new teachers for the 2013-14 school year.

Five portable classrooms purchased from Sylvania Schools are being transported and set up for use next year.
