900 workers at UT paid twice last week in error
12/19/2013Hundreds of University of Toledo employees were paid twice last week, but the extra money was an error, not an unannounced holiday bonus.
A payroll error meant about 900 nonfaculty UT employees received two paychecks Friday. Those workers received two direct-deposit checks in their accounts, a university spokesman said.
The error apparently occurred while the university fixed an earlier mistake. When UT sent payroll data Dec. 10 to Huntington Bank, pay for some workers inadvertently was omitted, according to the university.
Staff sent a new data file to the bank Dec. 11 for the omitted employees, but that new file accidentally included the roughly 900 employees whose pay information already had been sent Dec. 10.
The error meant about $670,000 extra was given to employees. The university’s weekly payroll is about $14 million, with about 8,000 checks cut a week.
Business managers of all affected employees were notified late last week about the error, and individual notifications were sent to each employee who received the extra pay, a university spokesman said.
Employees won’t get to keep the extra money. The university said Huntington Bank is working to reclaim the pay, taking care to not overdraw accounts if employees had withdrawn the funds.
