The Ohio Department of Education has expanded the testing window for the Ohio Achievement Assessments by a week.

Testing for students in grades three through eight will now be between April 21 and May 16. The education department said that the first three weeks will be the actual testing window, while the fourth week will be a make-up for students who were absent for the tests.

Many school districts have missed a string of instruction days because of snow or extreme cold this year, leaving less class time to prepare for the state tests. Among other things, this year's tests will determine if third-grade students advance a grade or are retained, under the state's Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Richard Ross said the state feels " it is important to provide educational leaders with flexibility regarding the assessments," because of the inclement weather.

The extension does not apply to the Ohio Graduation Tests.
