Perrysburg school board discusses new school
5/19/2014Perrysburg School Board continued discussions Monday night of plans for a new fifth- and sixth-grade school and the tax levy that will be necessary to pay for it.
The board is making plans to go to voters in November, but haven‘t voted on the proposal yet. If approved, the taxes would not be collected until Jan. 1, 2016, when a 1.85-mill levy that was mostly used to build Fort Meigs Elementary expires.
Overcrowding in the four elementary schools and at Perrysburg Junior High School are forcing the issue. The district is currently using 20 portable classrooms.
"I don't think it is a surprise to anyone in the community," board member Walt Edinger said. "Families understand and are aware solutions need to be addressed."
After the meeting the board had a executive session to talk about the purchase and/or sale of property.
Two members of the public spoke against the plan. Linda Bowyer and Mary Catherine Caron suggested the district build an addition to Perrysburg Junior High School or use the Commodore Building, which currently houses the district's administration.
