Historically black Ohio college at risk of losing accreditation amid money, enrollment trouble
6/28/2014WILBERFORCE, Ohio — A small, historically black Ohio university could lose accreditation due to problems including low enrollment and financial deficits.
The Higher Learning Commission has sent an order to Wilberforce University in southwestern Ohio requiring it to show why its accreditation from the commission shouldn’t be withdrawn.
The commission says Wilberforce must respond by Dec. 15. A commission team will visit Wilberforce in February.
The school’s interim president said in a statement Friday that Wilberforce has seen great advancement the past year and is committed to addressing concerns.
The commission says loss of accreditation can result in students lacking eligibility for federal financial aid and having problems transferring credits.
The school east of Dayton was founded in 1856.
