Monroe County Community College will ask voters for an additional 1-mill levy in November. The new continuing tax, if approved, would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $48 per year and generate about $5 million annually for academic programs, technology, and facility renovations.

The college last asked for a tax increase in 1980. It currently levies 2.194 mills. The board approved the tax request during a special meeting last week.

In a statement released after the unanimous vote, Chairman William Bacarella, Jr., said, “We have been treading water financially for seven to eight years to continue to meet the changing needs of our constituents. Even though our cost-containment efforts have produced substantial savings and efficiencies, MCCC still faces numerous challenges to our ability to continue to offer high quality education at an affordable price.”
