The Toledo Maritime Academy has named Tom Shafer as its new superintendent, effective Friday.

Mr. Shafer, a Navy veteran, received his bachelor’s degree in science education from Bowling Green State University in 1981 and a master’s in education administration and supervision from the University of Toledo in 1996. He has been a teacher and administrator at Toledo Public Schools, Columbus City Schools, North Baltimore Schools, and Evergreen Local Schools.

From 1996 to 2014, he was principal of Evergreen Middle School and served from 1998 to 2014 as the Evergreen district’s special-education director. He also worked as an Ohio Teacher Evaluation System evaluator and special-education administrator for Perrysburg City Schools since October, 2013.

“Maritime Academy has had many success stories over the past eight years,” Mr. Shafer said in a statement. “The school has a great reputation locally and nationally. I want to continue that.”

The Maritime Academy school board voted to hire Mr. Shafer in July. He will assume the superintendent’s job that was held by Renee Marazon, who also served as the school’s president while the superintendent’s job was vacant for the last year. Ms. Marazon will now serve only as the Maritime Academy’s president, school spokesman Matt Zaleski said.

The school did not release information about Mr. Shafer’s salary.
