Owens Community College evacuated its Perrysburg Township campus and canceled classes today after a gas line leak occurred while a crew worked on a nearby project.

College spokesman Jared Meade said no injuries have been reported but Owens decided to evacuate buildings and cancel activities and classes after the incident.

He said that people inside Heritage Hall first noted the gas smell at about 10 a.m., and then those inside College Hall also noticed it.

A spokesman for Columbia Gas of Ohio said a contractor was doing “routine work in the area” and “a leak occurred.”

Bill Loomer said that the gas has been shut off and crews are making repairs. He said three customers are affected, and no injures were reported.

Owens officials consulted with workers on site and because they didn’t know how long it might take to fix the problem the college “felt better just shutting down campus,” Mr. Meade said.

Classes are scheduled to resume Wednesday, and the closure does not affect the Findlay area or downtown Toledo campuses.
