AKRON — FirstEnergy Corp., the parent company of Toledo Edison, said Wednesday that because of the weak economy it is conducting a review of its work force needs with plans to eliminate 200 employees, most likely in early November.

Todd Schneider, a spokesman for the utility, said most of the layoffs would be centered on FirstEnergy’s Akron offices, which employ a total of nearly 2,350 workers, but that other offices including Toledo Edison’s in Toledo would be included in what it called a review of its work force needs.

The company said those laid off would be eligible for benefits under FirstEnergy’s severance plan.

Additionally, the utility said it expects further work force reductions throughout 2013 as the replacement of employees who leave through attrition will be limited.
