Sylvania households soon will receive new recycling bins to support the conversion of the city’s recyclables away from the use of open tubs, which cause litter problems on windy days, according to Mayor Craig Stough.

Republic Services, Sylvania's waste and recycling contractor, will distribute 95-gallon covered recycling carts — or for those who requested them in February, 65-gallon versions — to city residences during the week of April 15. Starting April 22, Republic will use automated trucks for collection and only materials in the larger carts will be picked up.

As part of the changeover, recycling collection will occur every two weeks. Material eligible for recycling is unchanged: aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines, paper bags, and shredded office paper.

Residents may keep the blue recycling but may not use them for city pickups. A drop-off site will be established for those who want to discard their tubs.

Sylvania City Council recently approved new three-year contracts with Republic for waste and recycling collection. Although residents should continue using their current garbage cans, city officials may consider the use of covered carts for trash collection in the future, the mayor said.
