Description: LeSo Gallery, located at 1527 Starr Avenue in Toledo, is hosting a closing reception and artist talk for its current exhibition, OgallalaLand. OgallalaLand focuses on the work of photographer, Dianna Lust. Lust blurs the line between documentary, activist, and beautiful landscape photography. The exhibition will feature numerous crisp, diverse and brilliant images that not only illustrate the character of the land but also that of the aquifer underneath, the Ogallala aquifer. Furthermore, artifacts from Lust’s trips out west will accompany several photographs.

In the town of Ogallala, Nebraska, 400 feet beneath the Earth's surface, lies a seemingly endless body of water. The Ogallala aquifer spans an eight state region which includes; Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas.

Since the 1950s, the aquifer has been rapidly declining due to pumping, specifically in Texas and Kansas because rainfall is only fourteen inches per year. The decline of the aquifer is irreversible; decline is measured in feet per year while recharge of the aquifer is measured in inches. The region is dependent on the aquifer water supply for development, irrigation, and factory farms, which account for one-third of America's agricultural production.

Lust says, “It is important for me to document the aquifer because it is one of the most important natural resources of our time. Not only is it important for the survival of the region, but also for our nation's food supply.”

The closing reception for OgallalaLand will take place Friday, August 30, 2013, from 7:00 – 9:00pm at LeSo Gallery, and is free to the public with refreshments provided. The artist talk will begin at 7:30pm.

Parking is available along Starr Avenue and across the street at the Toledo Sports Center. Please refrain from parking along Valleywood Drive in respect of our neighbors.
