The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid
Category: Dance
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Venue: Trinity Episcopal Church
Address: 316 Adams St.
Toledo, OH

Description: BTT’s “The Little Mermaid” swims and dances into Toledo April 17-19th at Trinity Episcopal Church. Nigel Burgoine, Ballet Theatre of Toledo’s Artistic Director and choreographer, has brought Hans Christian Andersen’s love story of a beautiful mermaid and a handsome prince to life. “This timeless story has been popular through the ages” says Burgoine. “As I began choreographing this ballet, I immediately thought of areas around the world that I have visited and envisioned the undersea worlds of the island of Paxos, Greece and the reef in Recife,Brazil. While diving in these locations, I became aware of how the underwater creatures move to the rhythm of the sea which is very much like dancers, dancing to the rhythm of the music.”

This fairy-tale story is set to the music of Ravel and takes the audience under the sea on a journey with the Little Mermaid. She is joined by a variety of fish, crabs and her five mermaid sisters as she discovers her independence and experiences the power of love from the sea to the land.

Performances are Friday, April 17th at 7pm and Sunday April 19th at 2pm and 4:30pm.
Tickets are available at Ballet Theatre of Toledo (419) 861-0895 and at the door.

Ballet Theatre of Toledo is a local non-profit arts organization that is dedicated to educating children and adults in the fine art of classical ballet in their Holland, OH studios.

Jazz@8 "A Night of Brubeck"
Category: Music
Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Venue: Sandusky State Theatre
Address: 107 Columbus Ave.
Sandusky, OH

Description: SANDUSKY, Ohio – Sandusky State Theatre and Michael Shirtz presents “Jazz @8 and A Night of Brubeck.”

The new JAZZ @ 8 series at Sandusky State Theatre was met with great enthusiasm in February with a great jazz music, artwork displayed by regional artists, and a new jazz club atmosphere. Michael Shirtz’s next "Jazz @ 8: A Night of Brubeck" will be presented on Friday, April 17, 8pm, with a show that highlights the music of the legendary Dave Brubeck featuring Cleveland's favorite saxophonist, Ernie Krivda, and jazz singer/pianist Michael Shirtz, with additional guest musicians to round out the famous quartet sound.

Special guest, tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda is regarded by critics such as the late Harvey Pekar as "one of the best jazz tenor men in the world." Krivda has written countless compositions in multiple genres and recorded over thirty albums released on a number of record labels with more on the way. Krivda’s journey in music began under his musician father through polka bands in his early teens, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the bands of Cleveland greats Eddie Bachus and Bill DeArango, to a life in music that includes the mentorship of Cannonball Adderley, tours with Quincy Jones, performances with musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald, Phil Woods, Sarah Vaughn, Buddy DeFranco, Groove Holmes, Terry Gibbs, John Faddis, The Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, David Sanborn, Jackie Wilson and concerts with his own groups at Jazz Clubs and Festivals all over the world. Krivda will release a new recording for Capri records this year, including touring that will give audiences an opportunity to hear "The sound that sets him apart" (Applegate music review), and the musician that the venerable Jazz Journal (of the UK) calls "both classic and brand new" .........The Legend Continues....

Michael Shirtz has been a longtime advocate of both Brubeck’s jazz and classical music compositions. After hearing Brubeck in his teen years, Shirtz was immediately inspired to follow his passion for jazz music and like Brubeck’s career, has led various formations of a jazz quartet.

His lyrical, commanding, and improvisational (scat singing) vocals mixed with his piano styles that are deeply influenced by Brubeck’s keyboarding styles, and conversational approach with his audiences, make Shirtz’s performance known for reaching out to both jazz lovers and non-jazz listeners alike.

In addition to jazz, audience goers will experience art displays by regional and student artists throughout the venue. Focused in a true club setting, this new series highlights the world of artistic creativity.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased and printed online at sanduskystate.com, by calling the Box Office 419.626.1950, or at the Theatre located at 107 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Audiences can also reserve tables by calling the Box Office.

Michael Shirtz’s JAZZ @ 8 series is an OCM Production.

Since 1928, The Sandusky State Theatre has operated as a top live entertainment destination for the 75,000 residents of Erie County and the surrounding area. The 1500-seat theater was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is the region’s largest performing arts venue. 2015 AIDS Walk Ohio - Toledo
Category: Special Events
Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Venue: International Park
Address: Rails To Trails Next To Maumee River
Toledo, OH

Description: Food Network and Chopped Host Ted Allen Named Honorary Chair
for 2015 AIDS Walk Ohio

Inspiring event will be held in three Ohio cities over two days – all for one cause.

AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio) is thrilled to announce Ted Allen, host of the hit primetime Food Network series Chopped and Columbus, Ohio native, as the 2015 AIDS Walk Ohio Honorary Chair.

Chopped is a reality based cooking television series that pits four chefs against each other competing for a chance to win $10,000. Mr. Allen was previously a judge on the first four seasons of Bravo’s Top Chef and Food Network’s Iron Chef of America, and was the food and wine specialist on the groundbreaking Emmy® Award winning Bravo series Queer Eye.

“I am delighted to be named Honorary Chair of AIDS Walk Ohio and look forward to joining the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ohio,” said Allen. “We need to continue to strive to ensure that people with HIV have access to treatment and services so they can live long, healthy lives. We also need to remain vigilant in working to prevent new HIV infections here in Ohio and across the U.S.”

AIDS Walk Ohio will be on April 18th in Columbus/Toledo and on April 19th in Dayton.

As of 2013, 19,554 Ohioans were reported living with HIV. Including undiagnosed individuals takes the estimate to about 23,000 Ohioans living with HIV in the state. Among them, less than one-in-three have achieved “viral suppression,” meaning they are getting treatment and have the virus under control. However, with support from events like this, nearly 80 percent of ARC Ohio patients are achieving viral suppression. These individuals have new hope for long, healthy lives.

ARC Ohio President & CEO, Bill Hardy said Allen’s support will help tremendously with raising awareness and encouraging others to take part in the walk.

“While we’ve made tremendous progress in treating HIV, Ohio still has about 1,000 new HIV diagnoses every year—mostly among young people—and two-thirds of them are not getting the treatment they need,” says Hardy. “We are thrilled with the support of Ted Allen, and know that he provides an opportunity to share this message with those who we may not have been able to reach before. His participation in AIDS Walk Ohio is a powerful way to help spread our message.”

To help increase fundraising for AIDS Walk Ohio, Allen will join participants who raise $1,000 or more at the Grand Walker Breakfast in Columbus on Saturday, April 18 and the Grand Walker/Grand Rider Brunch in Dayton on Sunday, April 19. Eligible Toledo participants will be able to participate in the Dayton Brunch.

“AIDS Walk Ohio is a great opportunity for anyone to make a truly meaningful contribution to the fight against HIVAIDS,” said Allen. “Every dollar raised will go a long way to keeping people healthy and alive as helping us stop the spread of this disease.”

Additional fundraising events for each city are currently underway. More information can be found by visiting www.aidswalkohio.com
