Sylvania Memorial Day Parade

Description: Local Sylvania area veterans groups, the City of Sylvania and Sylvania Recreation who is assisting with coordination of events announces that the 2015 Sylvania Memorial Day observances will be held on Monday; May 25, 2015. All area citizens are encouraged to come out to honor and respect for Veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Beginning at 9:00 AM, a brief service will be held at Toledo Memorial Park, 6832 Monroe St. Over 12,000 local veterans are laid to rest at Toledo Memorial Park. The “Sea of Flags” that decorate their graves is a truly magnificent sight. Local veterans groups and color guards also will also visit Association, Ravine and St. Joseph’s cemeteries to honor those area veterans buried there.

The annual Memorial Day Parade will again start from, St. Joseph’s School, 5411 Main St. beginning at 10:15 AM. The parade will proceed north on Main St. to Erie St. finishing at Veterans Memorial Field. The Northview and Southview High School Bands as well as local veterans, military, scout and civic groups and local political dignitaries will participate in this year’s parade.

A 30-minute Memorial Day service honoring America’s Veterans will begin at 11:00 AM at Veterans Memorial Field with City of Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough serving as master of ceremonies. Five large bronze monuments are in place at Memorial Field describing five American wars and listing the Sylvania area residents who gave up their lives in those conflicts.

CCMT Urban All American Celebration

Description: Central City Ministry of Toledo (CCMT) will honor the late Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins at its 24th Annual Urban All-American Celebration on Wednesday, May 27 at the Pinnacle in Maumee. Mayor Collins will be one of the recipients of the CCMT Achievement Award, which is presented to a graduate of a Toledo central city Catholic elementary school who exhibits extraordinary achievement or academic, athletic, and/or career success. Recipients must be positive role models for today’s students by demonstrating integrity, high ideals, and moral character. Mayor Collins graduated from St. James Catholic School in 1958. His wife, Sandra Drabik, will accept the award on his behalf.

The Urban All-American Celebration is an annual fundraiser that supports the students and staff of Rosary Cathedral and Queen of Apostles schools. The keynote speaker for the event is Bishop Daniel E. Thomas. A social hour with cash bar and a sponsor’s reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $100 each and are tax deductible.

The other recipient of the CCMT Achievement Award will be Joseph Tafelski, executive director of Advocates for Basic Legal Equality and current President of the Rotary Club of Toledo. He is a 1960 graduate of Rosary Cathedral.

At this event, CCMT also recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions in the promotion and enhancement of Catholic education in the central city schools through the presentation of the Rev. Bernard J. Boff Service Award. This year’s recipient of the Service Award is The Reverend Monsignor Michael R. Billian, pastor of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish and Corpus Christi Parish.

Guests will have the opportunity to purchase artwork created by students at the Creative Corner. The evening will conclude with each principal presenting a Rising Star Award to one student who best exemplifies the CCMT motto, “Education with a Catholic Foundation.”
