ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis. There is no cure, and only one drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that modestly extends survival.

Poetry Speaks @ Your Library featuring local poets Sandra Gill, Arnold Koester and The Raven
Poetry Speaks featured local poets for Fall 2015
Category: Special Events
Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Venue: Toledo Lucas County Public Library-Downtown Main Branch
Address: 325 N. Michigan St.
Toledo, OH

Description: Join us for what promises to be a lively evening as a small group of very talented local poets (Sandra Gill, Arnold Koester and The Raven) read a selection of their original poetry.
Sandra is a poet, performer and playwright. Her poetry spans many years and has garnered creative awards from the Toledo Arts Commission, PRIZM sponsored Beyond Words and Art-A-Fair Exhibitions, the Toledo Museum of Art and the Toledo Artists Club; with publications in The Kerf, UChange and Flights Literary Journal. Sandra is married with children and grandchildren with a family that supports her many endeavors. A graduate of the University of Toledo, she is currently compiling several volumes of poetry.
Arnie had songs dancing in his head as a teenager and they are still there. He read and studied poetry, because he wanted to write good lyrics and found that poetry was another way of singing. He grew up in the country, but not on a farm, in Berkey, Ohio where he had to learn how to entertain himself. After being in the service in the early 70s he lived in the Old West End for a number of years. He has been published in a few zines and has been a part of a few writers’ groups, which includes the Writers Company that his late wife Anne Bliss started. He was also a part of Back to Jack, a Readers Theater of Jack Kerouac writings performed locally as well as in Quebec City, Canada and Lowell, Massachusetts.
L.B. Catlin, the performance poet known as The Raven, draws his inspiration from a variety of writers including Edgar Allan Poe. Born in Amory, Mississippi, the Raven has performed throughout the United States, but calls Toledo, Ohio home. He has also performed at numerous local poetry events including the annual 100 Thousand Poets for Change event in 2014.
