Juneteenth Bake-Off winners announced

Winners were announced at the Juneteenth Bake-Off held at the Toledo Museum of Art on Saturday as part of the Juneteenth Family Fun Festival. The bake-off was designed to learn about food traditions and flavors of Southern and African cooking.

For peach cobbler: First place went to Clara Petty, second place to Mary Sue Ostafi, and third place to Diane Gordon.

For sweet potato pie: First place went to Delores Penn, second place to Sandra Page, and third place to Beverly Stephens-Davis.

For pound cake: First place went to Mary Lou Kennelly, second place to Paullette King, and third place to Leslie Henriquez.

All the winners were from Toledo, according to Sara Jaeger of the Museum staff.

The entries were served to judges in the Green Room of the museum, then winners were announced on the Monroe Street Terrace during the event.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union Gen. Gordon Granger informed slaves in Galveston, Texas, of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was enacted Jan. 1, 1863.
