Lucas County eyes local-food preservation methods

In observance of Local Foods Week, a series to raise awareness of local food and how it can help establish a sustainable future for the Ohio food system, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and the Ohio State University Extension Lucas County will present “From Plant to Plate: Preserving Your Fresh Local Produce.”

The series features Patrice Powers-Barker of the Ohio State University Extension Lucas County. She will discuss food-preservation: canning, freezing, and drying fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The free sessions are open to beginners and experienced food preservationists.

Locations, dates, and times are: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oregon Branch, 3340 Dustin Rd.; 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20, Sanger Branch, 3030 W. Central Ave.; 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 26, Holland Branch, 1032 S. McCord Rd.; 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10, Birmingham Branch, 203 Paine Ave., and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2, Waterville Branch, 800 Michigan Ave.
