Michigan growers predicted to see big apple crop

LANSING, Mich. — Estimates say Michigan’s apple growers likely will see a big harvest this year after weather destroyed most of last year’s crop.

The Michigan Apple Committee says the crop estimate of about 30 million bushels was announced last week at a USApple Outlook meeting. In 2012, the Michigan Apple Committee says conditions led to only about 3 million bushels of apples being harvested.

This year, the Michigan Apple Committee says there have been cool nights, rain and a good amount of sunshine to help the crop.

The predicted crop size would be one of the largest apple crops Michigan has seen. In 2011, Michigan produced about 26 million bushels of apples. Michigan typically is the third largest producer of apples in the U.S., behind Washington and New York.
