Day of fun scheduled for seniors

Senior citizens are invited to take part in the special day of activities and lunch at the career center. Students from Defiance, Fulton, Henry and Williams counties are enrolled at the center.

The Senior Citizens Day will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Feb. 28.

If a group cannot make it for the whole day, participants are welcome to either come in the morning from 9:15 to 11:50 a.m. (including lunch) or in the afternoon from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. (including lunch).

Soup and sandwich will be available for a cost of $3 per person over the lunch hour. Seven activities will be available for participants. Each activity will run about half an hour. These include a manicure for the women and a woodworking project for the men; a flower or plant activity; safety demonstrations; creating winter ornaments; basic health checks; cupcake decorating, and bingo.

Career Center Student Ambassadors and Tour Guides will be available to assist guests in the activities and guide them throughout the building.

Parking will be available in the west parking lot off State Rt. 66; enter the building through the west doors.

Extra Super

He's still a spring chick, and is years from needing a Golden Buckeye Chuck card. HuckyToo, a local legend in these parts, is carb loading for Super Bowl Sunday a week from today. He doesn't bench press but he does like to snuggle on the couch. The Springfield Township groundhog, and his coach/owner Charlie Hoag, are planning a Super Groundhog prediction on Super Bowl Sunday. So far, the seasonal seer hasn't raised a fuss about sharing an unofficial American holiday (Super Bowl Sunday) with a true holiday, namely Groundhog Day.

Now, to the super food: Frosted Flakes and Special K, morning treats, are pumping up HuckyToo's groundhog prediction skills. He loves the Special K that comes with fruit in the cereal, but Mr. Hoag said he has to remove the fruit or else the pet paws through the cereal and tosses the fruit aside making a bit of a mess. Peanut M&M's are particularly popular with the furry fella too, with some sips of sweet tea to wash it all down.

Mr. Hoag and his wife Terri, have issued the much-coveted invitations to their 14th Annual Holland Huckleberry Day Celebration. The event features a contest for groundhog-themed pastry (or other groundhog-themed food). As usual, donations from invited guests will be accepted to benefit Honor Flight Northwest Ohio. It is believed that the Hoags' groundhogs are the only such animals to raise funds for Honor Flight, a program dedicated to flying area veterans on all-expenses-paid trips to visit memorials in Washington.

Pick-me-up

And now, an interesting tidbit about taters. Russians celebrated Burger King's "Free fries days" recently. Actually, the 30 tons of potatoes, purchased in the Netherlands, were converted into fried potato wedges to be given to guests at the Burger King restaurants on those two days, according to information provided by Comunica PR agency, official press office of Burger King Russia.

Burger King Russia set two aims for the event. "First of all, we want to show the gratitude to each guest of our chain for the loyalty. The second aim is to inspire our guests. Every fifth person in Russia complains about feeling emotionally exhausted," according to the press release. “In this respect free potato wedges for our guests is a symbolic gift and a strong incentive to feel better after holiday,” acccording to Ivan Shestov, marketing director of Burger King Russia, in the prepared statement..

It was described as an opportunity for customers to lift themselves up, share the joy with their friends and family, and enjoy the taste of fried potato wedges.

We've heard no talk about plans to give away tons of tubers locally, but we have heard people, weary from the weather, talk about feeling emotionally, seasonally exhausted.

Perhaps a pick-me-up is on the way with predictions of an early spring. Shameless hint to HuckyToo (see above).

If you can bet on a Super Bowl game, certainly you can bribe a groundhog. Am scurrying to the store for Frosted Flakes, Special K, and peanut M&M's.
