    On The Town: Outdoor Dining

    Summer is nearly at its end, but there is still plenty of time for al fresco dining. There are many local restaurants that have patios — some small, some larger, some on the water — but all provide a chance to enjoy the outdoors while enjoying a meal.

    The Fulton County Fair drew crowds to the fairgrounds near Wauseon for games, food, exhibits, and rides. The Grandstand this year features the band Cheap Trick today and comic Larry the Cable Guy on Monday. Other events include harness racing, tractor pulls, and demolition derbies.

    Mourners gathered on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, to pray for the slain Springfield Township mother and her recovering husband after a shooting this week outside their home. About 50 people returned to the residence to hold a candlelight vigil for Susan Buchholz and Daniel Bennett.

    Neighborhood dispute leaves 2 dead

    After Susan Buchholz and Daniel Bennett watched their children get on the school bus Tuesday in Springfield Township, law enforcement officials said the two were shot by their neighbor and left lying on the street corner. Buchholz and the gunman — Jimmie Pemberton, 59 — later died.

  • In what was at the time called the worst accident in the history of the Detroit Limited Railway Lines; eight people died and 30 were injured when two interurban trolley cars from the Detroit, Monroe, and Toledo route crashed head-on.  A northbound car left Toledo at 12:25 p.m. Sept. 2, 1926. The southbound car left Detroit at 12:29 p.m. The trains were traveling on the same track. The southbound train was instructed to pull off onto a side track cut-off to wait for the northbound train to pass. That train’s conductor saw a northbound interurban that had pulled off on the opposite side track, mistakenly assumed that was the train he was supposed to wait for, and he proceeded toward Monroe. Unfortunately there was a second train heading northbound.

    Yappy Hour

    The Toledo Area Humane Society hosted Yappy Hour Sunday at Bar 145. The fund-raiser allowed dogs on leashes into the bar with a $10 cover charge to benefit the society.

    Overdoses in Lucas County

    In a two-year period, from June, 2014 through June, 2016, first responders were called out to nearly 3,000 drug overdoses across Lucas County. That works out to an average of about four per day. Four calls a day for patients who police, firefighters, and medics try to revive after they cross the invisible threshold from their coveted high to the brink of death.

    Recent events included the Eagle Point Colony, celebrating its 100th anniversary, is an exclusive 100-acre neighborhood tucked along the Maumee River in Rossford; AdBASH 2016 at the Beach Volleyball Complex in International Park; Sylvania Recreation District hosted a Pickleball Mixer to kick off the newly formed Sylvania Pickleball Club; 25th annual Polly Ball Tournament in memory of Polly Hylant Tracy was at the beach volleyball complex in International Park.

    Toledo Pride parade 2016

    The Toledo Pride continued on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, with its annual parade. The festival brought 20,000 people to downtown Toledo a year ago.
