Campbell not pressed in World Challenge
12/10/2005THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In a year built around positive thinking, U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell had to dig deep yesterday after dropping four shots over his last four holes for an even-par 72 in the Target World Challenge.
"I've actually increased my lead by one shot," Campbell said.
But only because he wasn't alone in his struggles.
Campbell hit a 5-iron into the hazard on the 18th hole and made double-bogey, but those trying to chase him also stumbled down the stretch at Sherwood Country Club, leaving him three ahead of Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke.
Campbell was at 9-under 135 heading into the weekend in the 16-man event that pays $1.3 million to the winner. Harrington (70) and Clarke (73) each bogeyed the 18th hole.
Kenny Perry was the only player who appeared capable of running with Campbell until he made bogey on the par-5 16th, then took double-bogey on the final hole for a 70.
Tournament host Tiger Woods butchered the par-5 11th and made double-bogey, and couldn't get anything else going in a round of 72.
t●SINGAPORE - Annika Sorenstam and American teenager Paula Creamer beat Jeong Jang and Meena Lee 2 and 1 in alternate-shot play to help the International team take a 4-2 lead over Asia after the first day of the Lexus Cup.
Sophie Gustafson and Suzann Pettersen, Catriona Matthew and Karen Stupples, and Erica Blasberg and Marisa Baena also teamed to win matches for the International team. Han Hee-won and Candie Kung, and Naree and Aree Song won matches for Asia.
Sorenstam and Stupples will face Lee and Gloria Park today in best-best play, while Creamer and Natalie Gublis will meet Kung and British Open winner Jeong Jang.
CANTON - The Toledo Ice (4-5) dropped another tough decision, this time at the hands of the Ohio Aviators last night.
Lionel Armstead, from Emmanuel Baptist, scored 30 points for the Ice, while Jamel Staten dropped in 23.
Dubrey Black added 13, while Bowsher grad Aaron Bates recorded 12 points.
Former Bowling Green Falcon Kevin Netter led the Aviators with 22 points.
The Ice will return to the SeaGate Center tomorrow where it plays host to the Kentucky Colonels at 7 p.m.
BOWLING GREEN - Clarkson rallied from a 3-0 deficit yesterday to defeat Bowling Green State University 6-4 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action.
After Derek Whitmore, James Unger and Don Morrison scored Falcon goals, Clarkson scored five unanswered goals before Jonathan Matsumoto made it 5-4, but Clarkson scored at 19:59 on an open net for the final score.
The Falcons outshot the Golden Knights 41-29.
BGSU goalie Jimmy Spratt made 23 saves. Clarkson goalie David Lecsio made 37.
BGSU is 4-11-1 overall, 4-8-1 CCHA. Clarkson is 10-4-1, 5-2-1.
CARY, N.C. - Jason Garey scored two goals in an NCAA tournament-record 15-second span and top-seeded Maryland beat SMU 4-1 to advance to the championship game of the NCAA College Cup.
Maryland meets second-seeded New Mexico, a 2-1 semifinal winner over Clemson, in tomorrow's title game.
Garey's goals gave the Terrapins (18-4-2) a 3-0 lead.
Robbie Rogers found room along the left wing and sent a cross to the back post where A.J. Godbolt headed the ball down for Garey, who scored his first goal at 46:41.
Seconds after the ensuing restart, a pass intended to lead Garey on a run toward the SMU goal caromed off the heel of Mustangs defender Mynor Gonzalez, and Garey beat goalkeeper Matt Wideman at 46:56.
Mark Bedics, NCAA assistant director of media coordination and championships, said the NCAA regular-season record for two goals by a player is nine seconds. Bedics said records show nothing close to two goals in 15 seconds in postseason games.
In the nightcap, New Mexico's Andrew Boyens scored the tiebreaker in the 63rd minute, leaping and twisting his body to head a cross from David Gualdarama to the right of diving Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi.
