About the last thing Highland Meadows Golf Course needed was another inch-plus of rain.

But a storm blew through yesterday afternoon that left water standing in the fairways, converted bunkers into small pools, turned the greens into sponges, and left officials of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic keeping a very wary eye on Ten Mile Creek.

The inclement weather cut short numerous LPGA practice rounds and forced cancellation of the late-afternoon Image Group Celebrity/Pro Challenge. Also, much of the day-long Toledo Edison/ProMedica Heath System Pro-Am at Inverness Club was washed out.

Farr director Judd Silverman said he was confident today's National City Celebrity Pro-Am, the tournament's big money-maker scheduled to start at 7 a.m. and run throughout the day, would be staged as planned.

By early evening the sky was clear and the sun shinning, but the creek was at its brim and course workers were ankle deep in water with pumps attempting to clear the low area between the No. 2 green and No. 3 tee. Plus, the superintendent's crew faced a long night of pumping and repairing sand bunkers.

Ten Mile Creek, which flooded badly during the 2006 Farr Classic, was well out of its banks for several days last week after severe storms dumped more than three inches of rain one night.

Farr officials said the flooding was worse even than in '06. But the water subsided Sunday morning and the course was in remarkably good shape for Monday's pro-am events and until yesterday's storm hit.

Golfers were evacuated off the course just after 2 p.m. because of threatening weather. Heavy rains started at 2:40 and tornado sirens were sounded at about 2:55. About one inch of rain fell during the first hour of the storm, according to Meadows course superintendent Dan Salois.

The rain continued for another couple hours, although at a far lighter pace.

"The golf course has taken a lot of water in the last week," Silverman said. "Now, another substantial downpour forced us to cancel our afternoon events, which is unfortunate. Hopefully, Ten Mile Creek was down far enough that we'll be able to survive this hit."

The 72-hole Farr Classic, with a field of 143 professionals and one amateur, begins tomorrow with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
