The middle of the pack is the best that northwest Ohio teams could do after the first day of competition at state golf tournaments yesterday.

Bryan is sixth and Wauseon 11th of 12 teams in the Division II boys event on the Ohio State Scarlet course.

Senior Mac McLaughlin and sophomore Scott Smith each shot a 78 to put Hunting Valley University School in the lead with a 319 total. Bryan sits at 345 and Wauseon 366.

At The Players Club at Foxfire in Lockbourne, Lima Central Catholic holds a two-stroke lead (317-319) over defending champion Sugarcreek Garaway in the Division III tournament. Ottawa Hills is sixth at 339.

Garaway's Kevin Miller is the individual leader with a 72.

In girls Division II, at Ohio State's Gray Course, Samantha Stahler's 76 led Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown to a two-shot lead over Tipp City Tippecanoe and Poland Seminary, 344-346.

This is the first year for a girls Division II tournament as previously there was only one division.

Individually, Maumee Valley's Yang Li is in a tie for fourth just six strokes behind leader Ariel Witmer of North Lima South Range at 76.
