Scott No. 1 in Blade basketball poll

1/5/2001

The first Blade boys basketball poll of the season is out and only one of last season's four divisional poll champions starts the new season at No. 1.

Liberty-Benton (6-0), which won the Division III Blade title last year, opens 2000-01 at the top in that division, one notch above last year's Division II poll winner, Otsego (5-0), which has dropped a classification because of reduced enrollment.

Liberty-Benton collected four Blade Division IV poll titles in succession under coach Steve Williman (1993-96).

In Division I, coach Earl Morris's Scott Bulldogs (5-1) begin January at No. 1, replacing archrival Libbey, which went 25-1 last year to win the big-school Blade trophy. Scott sits at No. 1 on the strength of handing preseason City League favorite St. John's Jesuit (8-1) its only loss of the season. Libbey (7-1) ranks third.

Ottawa-Glandorf sits atop Division II, and in Division IV, veteran head coach Paul Wayne's Holgate Tigers are the last remaining unbeaten among the area's small-school teams.
