Lake coach Noftz suspended for rest of season

1/19/2001

Lake boys basketball coach Greg Noftz has been suspended for the remainder of the season for “failure to comply with administrative directives,” according to Lake Local Schools superintendent Paul Orshoski.

The superintendent declined to comment on the specifics of the suspension.

Noftz was in his second year as coach of the Flyers, who will be coached for the rest of the season by assistant Terry Tansel.

Noftz could not be reached for comment.

Orshoski said the suspension does not affect Noftz's teaching duties.

He will continue working as a physical-education teacher in the district's elementary schools.

Tansel is in his first year of teaching and coaching at Lake. The Flyers are 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Suburban Lakes League.

Perrysburg's Ray Pohlman and Rocky Farlow of Sandusky Perkins will be two of the six football coaches for the North in the Ohio All-Star Classic June 30 at Columbus Crew Stadium.

When Rossford honors its 2001 athletic hall of fame inductees before the Bulldogs' basketball game against Northview tomorrow night, it will obviously be a Heck of a ceremony.

Three of the six inductees are Hecks - former basketball coach Mike Heck and two basketball-star sons, James and Kevin.

Also inducted will be Jerry Brossia (football, 1964), Jerry Baumgartner (baseball coach, 1969-94) and Scott Spencer (basketball, 1976).

Mike Heck (1967-97) was also an athletic director at the school. James Heck (1990) earned 13 varsity letters and Kevin Heck (1987) earned 10.

Blair Kramer of St. John's Jesuit High School has committed to a football scholarship offer from Ball State University, and has been selected to play in the prestigious Big 33, Pennsylvania-Ohio all-star game July 21 in Hershey, Pa.

Kramer, a 6-4, 252-pound defensive lineman, was a second-team Division I All-Ohioan and also made the All-Blade, All-City League and all-district first teams.

Kalida is off to an 8-4 start, moving coach Dick Kortokrax (674-237) to within two victories of Bob Arnzen for second place among Ohio coaches.

Arnzen, the longtime Delphos St. John's coach, was a frequent opponent of Kortokrax before retiring.

A good tournament run this year could push Kortokrax past Paul Walker early next season. Walker won 695 games and five state titles at Middletown.

Ottawa-Glandorf coach Dave Sweet achieved his 350th career victory when the Titans beat Fremont Ross 71-52 on Dec. 29.

New Riegel boys coach Rick DeMoss picked up No. 300 in a 53-48 decision over Vanlue.
