Morrison to be twice the commissioner

The workload will double for longtime Great Lakes League commissioner Larry Morrison next school year.

Morrison, the GLL commissioner for the past 11 years, recently was also named the Northern Lakes League commissioner beginning with the 2001-02 school year.

“Both are quality leagues and have quality people,'' Morrison said.

He replaces Bill Sanford, who will retire at the end of this school year after serving as NLL commissioner for the past 13 years.

As a commissioner, Morrison's duties include assigning officials for athletic events, holding meetings with athletic directors and principals and attending athletic events. He expects to be able to carry out all of his responsibilities as commissioner for both leagues, which comprise 14 schools.

Morrison, 65, said it's not unprecedented for someone to serve as commissioner for more than one league. He knows of a couple situations within Ohio where people oversee more than one.

“If I can handle it next year and both leagues are satisfied, I'd continue to do it,'' Morrison said. “Otherwise, I'd make the choice.''

Morrison, a Sylvania resident, said if he ends up choosing one league over the other, he'll probably step down from the GLL position because the NLL position requires less travel from his residence. Morrison said the interaction with students is what keeps him going as a commissioner.

“I enjoy doing it because I enjoy working with the kids,'' Morrison said. “Even though it's not directly working with them, I'm still working with young people.''

Morrison spent half this school year as a temporary principal at Otsego High while working as the GLL commissioner. He doesn't have any plans to work as a principal after this school year ends.
