Girls basketball roundup: Irish fall to Beavercreek

MASON, Ohio - Central Catholic gave the defending Division I state champions a scare, but Beavercreek held on for a 49-44 victory in the first round of the Mason Tournament yesterday.

The Fighting Irish trailed 31-18 at one point in the contest before rallying, but fell short in losing for the first time after six victories.

Kelly Helvey led Central and tied for game scoring honors with 16 points.

Alison Bales, Beavercreek's 6-6 center, also had 16 points, while Kim Ingle added 12 points for the Beavers (7-0).

CLAY 75, GENOA 31

Kate Achter threw in 21 points for the Eagles, who bolted to a 49-14 lead at the half in the River East Tournament championship at Waite.

Nina Mylnek and Kristin Crawford contributed 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Clay (8-1).

Nicole Nissen tallied 16 for the Comets (2-6).

Achter was named tournament MVP. Also making first team were Crawford and Nicole Hofbauer from Clay, Nissen, Waite's Laquita Temple and Rossford's Noelle Owen.

WAITE 51, ROSSFORD 46

The Indians outscored the Bulldogs 20-8 at the free-throw line and pulled away with 23 points in the final quarter of the River East consolation game.

Laquita Temple tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds for Waite (2-6). Gennette McCarver also scored 17.

Angie Redway paced Rossford (1-7) with nine.

BOWSHER 63, SOUTHVIEW 35

Kameesha Hairston contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and nine assists for the Rebels (9-1), who outscored the Cougars 24-10 in the final quarter.

Lamesha Johnson led Bowsher with 18 points and Jazlyn Davis added 10.

Stephanie Kneisley and Kristi McCoy had seven apiece for Southview (2-4).

NORTHVIEW 74, ROGERS 31

Nikki Smith scored 19 points and Julie Dempster added 10 for the Wildcats (6-1), who led 32-14 at the half.

Candace Brown and Kelli Short tallied 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Rams (0-9).

EASTWOOD 50, NEWPORT, WASH. 33

PHOENIX - The Eagles outscored Newport, Wash., by a 19-6 margin in the fourth quarter to claim a win in its first game of the Cactus Jam Tournament.

The Eagles had three players finish in double figures, led by Stacey Weiland's game-high 16 points.

Jessica Schult scored 13 and Whitney Hartman added 11 for Eastwood, now 7-0 on the season.

The Eagles will play the host school, Chaparral High, today at 5:30 p.m. (Toledo time).

WOODMORE 73, CLEVELAND RHODES 18

ELMORE - Ashley Perkins scored 15 points and Catie Lavigne and Megan Greenley added 10 apiece for the Wildcats, who led 42-4 at the half in the Portage River Shootout.

BOWLING GREEN 41, LIBBEY 25

ELMORE - Katy Marsh scored 12 to lead the Bobcats, who outscored the Cowboys 13-6 in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead in the Shootout. Tasha Brock tallied 10 for Libbey.

GIBSONBURG 63, DANBURY 34

LAKESIDE - Sarah Walby scored nine of her 14 points in the third quarter as the Golden Bears outscored the Lakers 26-2 to open a 54-24 lead.

FREMONT ST. JOE 54, LAKOTA 40

FREMONT - Rachel Fisher scored 15 points for the Streaks, who led 28-19 at the half.

Kristen Lentz tallied 11 for the Raiders.

TONTOGANY - Hanna Murphy scored 14 points, Andrea Shoup had 13 and Jenny Shultz 10 for the Knights (4-5), who outscored the Rangers 28-9 in the third quarter to build a 20-point lead.

Alicia St. Johns scored 12 and Katie Holm 10 for Northwood (4-3).

MILLBURY - Jen Kessey poured in 20 points and Trish Brashear added 15 for the Bulldogs, who outscored the Flyers 41-21 in the second half. Shannon Abbey (12) and Megan Jacks (11) led Lake.
