Weiland, Butler named first-team All-Ohio

COLUMBUS - Eastwood senior Stacey Weiland and Liberty-Benton junior Katie Butler were named on the All-Ohio girls basketball first teams in their respective divisions yesterday by the Associated Press based on recommendations of a media panel.

Weiland, a 5-7 guard, averaged 21.9 points, 5 rebounds and 4.5 steals a game as the Division II Eagles went unbeaten in the regular season.

Clyde's Heather Kwiatkowski was Division II third team.

Butler, a 6-2 forward, averaged 27.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.6 blocked shots for Division III Liberty-Benton.

Named to the third team in Division III were seniors Jill Evans of Archbold (18.0) and Lauren Slusser of Columbus Grove (25.1).

The player of the year in Division II was 6-1 senior Barbara Turner of Cleveland East Tech.

The University of Connecticut bound standout, who can play any position from point to pivot, averaged 23.5 points, 17.4 rebounds and 4 steals a game.

The top players in Division III were Sardinia Eastern's Micah Harvey and Sarah Burgess of two-time defending state champion South Euclid Regina.

Harvey is a 5-8 senior who averaged 24 points a game. Burgess, a 5-10 senior who has signed to play at South Carolina, averaged 17.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists for Regina.
