Notre Dame rowers sweep gold

Ten minutes after the other coaches had finished passing out medals, rowing coach Pete Fox was still hanging them around the necks of the Notre Dame Academy crew.

Forty-eight medals, to be exact, for an explosive performance in the 18th Annual Toledo International Rowing Regatta. Notre Dame swept the gold in the high school women's novice eights, novice fours, lightweight eights and lightweight fours — as well as a second in high school eights and third in open fours.

Four of the rowers — Lindsay Arrington, Pam Bottles, Meaghan Joyce and Kate Langenderfer — came out of the novice eight race, stepped off the dock again and won in novice fours.

“They kicked some serious butt today,” Fox said. “That was 13 miles.”

The 2.9-mile head race drew 180 boats from clubs and high schools in Ohio, Michigan and Ontario, Canada.

Other Toledo crews that did well included St. Ursula Academy, winner of the women's open four event and the women's high school eights, and St. John's Jesuit, which took first in both the men's high school varsity eight heavyweight event and the lightweight open eights.
