St. Ursula's Volberg, doubles team win

PORT CLINTON - The defending state Division I doubles champs - St. Ursula's Kate Lohner and Angie Bhat - are headed for Columbus again after winning a district title yesterday, and teammate Anna Volberg will make her annual state appearance in singles.

Volberg defeated freshman Neela Vaez of Notre Dame 6-1, 7-5 in the title match after beating Northview's Kristen Holler 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Vaez, who defeated Start's Christine Cready 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinal, is also headed to the state tournament as the top two advance in Division I.

Lohner and Bhat beat Northview's Nikki Dzubay and Stacy Jurich 6-2, 6-2 in the doubles final.

The St. Ursula pair topped Findlay's Ashley Collette and Rachel Wallace 6-1, 7-6 in one semi and Dzubay and Jurich topped Erica Wolfe and Meghan Michaels of Fremont Ross 6-4, 7-5 in the other.

PORT CLINTON - Maumee Valley sophomore Sheweta Pai defeated Natalie Day of Ottawa Hills 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the Division II finals.

Pai beat Napoleon's Emily Meyer 7-5, 6-0 in the semifinals and Day topped Green Bears teammate Sheena Dasani 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the other semi.

Dasani will join Pai and Day in the state tournament next weekend after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Meyer in the consolation finals as the top three advance.

In the doubles final, Christin and Jennifer Bicksler of Mansfield Christian beat Maumee Valley's Amirita Padda and Elyssa Pesin 6-1, 6-3. Joining those doubles teams in Columbus will be Huron's Abby Cook and Meredith Skaggs.
