City: Roberts' play saves Knights
2/7/2004Darryl Roberts made a driving layup and got fouled with five seconds left and his three-point play allowed St. Francis to avoid an upset with a 61-60 City League win over Bowsher last night.
After Roberts' free throw, the Rebels Craig Weaks' 3-point attempt banged off the front of the rim at the buzzer.
Just 12 seconds earlier, Weaks had drilled a trey that gave Bowsher a 60-58 lead.
Weaks finished with a game-high 15 points for the Rebels, who fell to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in the City. Andy Smith added 10 for Bowsher.
Roberts, C.J. Johnson and Drew Donovan scored 13 apiece for the visiting Knights (12-4, 7-2). Steve Szenderski tallied 12 for St. Francis, which stayed within one game of co-league leaders St. John's and Libbey.
The Knights converted 18 of 20 from the free throw line, while Bowsher was 10 of 17.
Todd Lindroth scored 20 points and Whitmer took control with a 20-3 run that started in the third quarter.
J.J. Fought added 16, Nick Specht 15 and Jermaine Fletcher 14 for Whitmer (7-7, 6-3).
The Rams (5-8, 3-6) placed four in double figures - Donovan Walton and Stewart Armstrong with 12 each, Brent Jones added 11 and Marquis Glenn had 10.
Whitmer hit seven treys to none for Rogers, and canned 12 of 18 free throws to the Rams' 5 of 10.
The visiting Irish edged Waite on the strength of a 15-8 advantage in the second quarter.
Freshman Sam Bastian topped Central Catholic (10-6, 4-5) with 17 points, while Zack Hartle contributed 13 and Steve Phillips 12.
Darrion Griffin topped the Indians (8-7, 2-7) with 21 points, aided by King Wilson's 14.
Waite was hampered by a game-ending knee injury to Mike Lucas midway in the second quarter. Going into last night's game, Lucas was averaging 18.3 points, third best in the City. He scored five points before leaving the contest.
Speed and hot shooting propelled the Eagles to a 17-9 first-quarter lead and Clay (7-6, 4-4) rolled from there.
Brett McDougle (19), John Nelson (14) and Devin Scarbrough (13) scored in double figures for Clay.
Robert Barner led the Polar Bears (3-11, 1-7) with 10 points.
