City League: St. John s jumps on Clay

St. John s dominated Clay on both sides of the ball in the first half, scoring all of its points before the break in a 28-0 rout of the Eagles in City League action last night.

Titans quarterback Sean Patterson ran in the first score from a yard out in the first quarter, and hit Jalil Carter with a 10-yard touchdown strike in the second to widen its lead. Patterson was 9-of-15 for 103 yards on the night.

DeAndre Ware led the rushing attack for St. John s (4-0, 1-0) with 22 carries for 161 yards and scoring runs of one and four yards.

As a team, the Titans far outgained Clay (1-3, 0-1) on the ground, 271 yards to 6.

Central Catholic 35, Start 21

It was too little, too late for the Spartans, who spotted the Irish 35 points before roaring back in the final quarter.

Dane Sanzenbacher, who hauled in five passes for 127 yards, scored twice for Central (3-1, 0-1) on a five-yard run and on a 20-yard pass from Kevin Jansen. Jansen also scored on a two-yard run.

The Irish defense scored when Lee Marquette recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Brad Leestma, a sophomore backup quarterback for Start (0-4, 0-1), completed 9 of 15 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns in the final quarter. James Buckingham caught two of the TD passes.

Rogers 20, Libbey 0

Ronney Hester ran for two touchdowns and passed for another for the Rams (3-1, 1-0).

After a scoreless first quarter, Hester went one yard to Rogers first TD, then capped a 56-yard, eight-play drive with a six-yard TD toss to Will Armstrong with no time left on the clock to end the first half. Without that last-second tally, it would have been 7-0 at halftime.

Hester, who completed 7 of 11 passes for 100 yards and carried the ball 24 times for 107 yards, finished the scoring with a 14-yard TD run in the third period.

Isaiah Ballard added 58 yards rushing and returned an intercepted pass 41 yards.

The Rams finished with 207 rushing yards and 307 yards of net total offense to 136 yards for Libbey, all on the ground.

Glen Miller paced the Cowboys ( 0-4, 0-1) with 15 carries for 78 yards.

Woodward 43, Bowsher 22

Makonnen Rice ran for 359 yards and five touchdowns as the Polar Bears scored the last 29 points to record their first victory.

Rice scored on runs of 12, 6, 41, 8 and 1 yards and Sam Wallace added a one-yard TD run. Alexis Gama also booted a 27-yard field goal for Woodward (1-0, 1-3).

Eddie Toles scored on six and five-yard runs for the Rebels (1-3, 0-1), who led 14-7 after the first quarter. Rashawn Bryson also scored from eight yards out for Bowsher.

Scott 6, Waite 0

Antoine Ramsey rushed for 175 yards on 29 carries and scored the winning touchdown in overtime, as Scott (3-1) knocked off Waite (1-3) in their CL opener.

Each defense had four fumble recoveries and an interception.

Bulldog quarterback Derek Bobo ran for 55 yards.
