Libbey senior Danyelle McGary, one of the top sprinters in City League girls track history, has chosen Purdue University as the place to continue her track career.

McGary, who was Division I state runner-up in both the 100 and 400-meter events last season, was also second in the 400 as a sophomore in 2004. Her 53.64 clocking in the 400 final set a state record for that event. She also qualified for the 200 final at state, but was disqualified because of a false start. McGary will make things official with Purdue by signing a letter of intent tomorrow at Libbey.

Central Catholic senior volleyball and basketball standout Ellen Herman signed a letter of intent yesterday to accept a volleyball scholarship offer from Ohio University.

The 6-foot-1 Herman, a four-year starter in volleyball, was named All-Ohio first team earlier this week after receiving second-team all-state honors a year ago. Herman, a 3.8 student in the classroom, will also be a third-year starter in basketball.

Senior Darryl Roberts of St. Francis de Sales, who led the City League in scoring (23.7 average) in boys basketball last season, will make things official today when he signs a letter of intent with the University of Akron.

Roberts was named first-team All-City, All-Blade and all-district as a junior, and was also named All-Ohio special mention.

Troy Jackson ended a 36-year career as a football official last weekend when he worked a Toy Bowl youth championship game at the Glass Bowl for the CYO. He had worked his final high school varsity game a few weeks prior.

Jackson, 65, a 1959 Scott graduate, played varsity football for three seasons for the Bulldogs. After serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 through 1966, he began coaching and officiating.

Jackson coached a variety of youth sports, mostly basketball, first for 12 years as part of a City of Toledo program, and the past 25 years at the Wayman Palmer YMCA.

During his years as a football official, spent mostly in the City League and Northern Lakes League, he worked several state playoff games, and was the head official for two CL Shoe Bowl championship games in the mid 1980s. Factoring in junior varsity, freshman and grade-school games along with his varsity schedule, Jackson officiated close to 1,000 football games.

Patrick Henry s Marc Krauss is a two-time All-Ohio pick at wide receiver. But the senior standout set a Northwest Ohio Athletic League record that had nothing to do with catching passes.

Krauss also serves as the Patriots kicker, and in that role he set an NWOAL season record for PAT kicks in league play. Krauss made 45 extra-point kicks, breaking the record of 37 set by Liberty Center s Todd Spangler in 1998.

A handful of teams and individuals from southeast Michigan did well at the state cross country meet.

Bekah Smeltzer, of Monroe Jefferson, took home the individual title in Division 2 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. Her time of 17:44 was tops among a field of 251.

In Division 1, Bedford s girls finished in 20th place with Aloiya Earl (19:05.05) taking 37th in the team race and 50th individually.

Monroe s Cole Sanseverino took seventh individually in Division 1 to lead the Trojans to an 18th-place finish as a team. Sanseverino s time was 15:47.35. Justin Heck came in 25th among the individuals(16:02.75).

In Division 2, Monroe Jefferson s Willy Dague brought home an 11th-place finish individually running a time of 15:54.10.

Erie Mason had the best finish among the area boys teams in Division 3. The Eagles were fifth overall led by Brandon Griffin s eighth-place individual finish (15:57.57). Jesiah Rodriguez s time of 16:22.65 was good for 30th place in the individual race.

In the Southview-Mansfield Madison football game story last Saturday, Griff Whalen scored Southview s second touchdown on a 20-yard pass reception. Whalen s name was misspelled in a photo caption.

Another caption accompanying the story should have read Mansfield s Devin Ohl and Southview s Alex Renner.
