Sidelines: TC selects Miller as football coach
2/9/2006Toledo Christian has named John Miller as its head football coach.
Miller, the sports/recreation outreach pastor at Cedar Creek Church, served as the junior high football coach at TC last year.
I m very excited about this opportunity, because I feel Toledo Christian has a lot of great athletes, Miller said. I hope to build on the strengths of this program.
In terms of changing schemes, or changing personnel, I won t know about that until the summer, when I meet with players and analyze what we have and what we can do.
Miller, a 1983 Rossford graduate, replaces Mike Snyder, who started the program seven years ago.
Snyder, who also serves as athletic director and girls basketball coach, said his decision to step down as coach wasn t easy.
I knew it was time, Snyder said. I didn t feel I could coach back-to-back sports and serve as AD.
Last year Toledo Christian finished 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference.
St. Francis de Sales is not only considered the favorite in theDivision I boys swimming sectional Saturday at the Knights pool, anything less than a title would be a major surprise.
We re just a really deep team this year, St. Francis coach Keith Kennedy said.
Colin Murtagh, the state s top returner from last season in the 50 and 100-freestyle races, leads the Knights.
Mike Carroll, a senior, is considered a favorite in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, while junior Scott Friderichs is expected to contend in the 200 and 500-freestyle races.
Central Catholic, Maumee, Maumee Valley Country Day, Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, St. John s, Start, Northview, Southview, Toledo Christian, Whitmer, Clay, Lake, Rossford and St. Ursula will also be represented.
Competition is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
Miller City girls basketball coach Chris Rump recently reached a milestone.
Rump, in his sixth season, recorded his 100th career victory with an 80-17 win Saturday over Wayne Trace. Rump raised his record to 100-35.
Elmwood wrestling coach Dave Lee reached the 300-win mark in dual matches thanks to victories Tuesday over McComb and North Baltimore.
The Northview hockey team clinched its first league title since 1987 last weekend.
The Wildcats improved to 8-0-0 in the Red Division of the Northwest Hockey Conference with convincing wins over rival Southview and perennial powerhouse Bowling Green. Northview downed the Cougars 7-1 and then whipped the Bobcats 6-1.
Although Northview still faces Findlay tomorrow and St. Francis on Sunday, the Wildcats have won the title with 16 points.
The Knights (6-3-0) are second followed by St. John s (5-2-1) and neither can catch Northview. (The six-team division plays a 10-game league schedule.)
The Titans still could pass St. Francis and finish second with wins over Southview and Bowling Green this weekend.
Bedford (6-2-0) seized control in the race for the White Division title with two wins last weekend. Whitmer (5-3-0) remained in the hunt with a win over Perrysburg last Friday.
The Mules and Panthers square off Saturday at Tam O Shanter at 7 p.m.
In the Blue Division, the regular season finale between Anthony Wayne and Fremont Ross could decide the title on Saturday.
The Little Giants are attempting to win the championship in just their first year competing in the league.
