Sidelines: CL hall of fame to add 9
9/27/2006The City League hall of fame will induct nine members Nov. 6 at a banquet held at the SeaGate Convention Centre.
Among the athletes elected are Lee Pete of Libbey (1943 graduate), Bob Wilczynski of St. Francis de Sales (1967), Bill Bradish of Start (1971), Mary Ann Robinson of Central Catholic (1977), Jeremy Lincoln of DeVilbiss (1987), Eric Newsome of Rogers (1983) and Kathy Koch of Central Catholic (1988).
Dick Torio was selected as distinguished citizen. Charlie Delker, who was Waite s football coach for 16 years, was elected as honored coach.
Pete was a standout in football, basketball and baseball and was a quarterback at the University of Toledo.
Wilczynski won eight letters in five sports and played baseball at the University of Dayton.
Bradish was All-City in basketball and baseball.
Robinson helped the Irish win four CL girls basketball titles.
Lincoln was a standout in football and track at DeVilbiss and in college at Tennessee, then played 10 season in the NFL.
Newsome was All-City basketball first team three times and helped Miami win a Mid-American Conference title.
Koch was All-City in basketball (player of the year in 1987) and volleyball and also ran track.
Cardinal Stritch won the Toledo Area Athletic Conference golf title by 10 strokes over Northwood at Detwiler Golf Course.
The Cardinals carded a 331, led by Torey Brummett, who shot 77 for medal honors. Northwoodfinished second (341) and the Rangers Erick Scharer placed second individually with a 79.
Cardinal Stritch also had the third-best finisher with Zach Niehaus (81). The Cardinals Gary McGinnis shot 82 to tie Louis Fahrbach of Northwood and Luke Tracy of Emmanuel Christian for fourth.
Brummett was named the TAAC player of the year with a 39.8 stroke average.
Maumee Valley was third (345) followed by Ottawa Hills (359), Danbury (364), Emmanuel Christian (367) and Toledo Christian (369).
Bryan High School and golfing legend Jack Nicklaus not only share the same nickname, they both have dominated their competition for years.
The Golden Bears won their 26th Northwest Ohio Athletic League golf title last weekend at Auglaize Golf Club and two cubs led the way. Freshman Zach Davenport carded a 73 to take second individually and sophomore Andy Shaffer came in third with a 75. Bryan held off second-place Wauseon, 304-308.
I haven t seen us play better, said first-year coach Eric Ruffer. Bryan has won a lot of league titles. We had four kids that all played well at the same time. That was very exciting.
Senior Alex Hofbauer (77) also made the All-NWOAL first team and senior Derek Miller shot an 81.
Wauseon s Tyler Uphaus set a NWOAL tournament record with a 70.
I knew [Uphaus] was playing very well, so I was a little nervous, Ruffer said.
Archbold finished third (336) followed by Liberty Center (339) and Swanton (341).
Davenport had struggled early in the season, according to Ruffer.
Last week he really broke out. He s really come on strong, Ruffer said. We needed that.
Shaffer also has been playing beyond his years and overcame a triple bogey on his second hole.
He played very well. He made par the rest of the way, Ruffer said.
Hofbauer, who has been the team s No. 1 golfer all season, struggled on the greens but still came in under his average.
Miller has dropped his average by three strokes and has come on late in the year, according to Ruffer.
Southview s Kyle Fitzpatrick won the Bob Reall Invitational in Lancaster last Saturday.
Fitzpatrick s time of 17:07.37 was the best among 118 runners in the Division I race.
Two female Cougar runners also ran well. Alixe Korsnack (21:17) finished 11th and Kelly Grieve (21:28) was 13th.
Southview s girls placed third, while the Cougar boys were 12th.
Eastwood s Corey Johnson finished second at the Malone College Invitational.
Johnson clocked a 16:23, just two seconds off the winning pace in the Division II race.
