City: Knights run over Bowsher

Chris Weiland led the way with 21 carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns as St. Francis rumbled past Bowsher's Rebels for a 35-6 City League football victory.

Gary Michalski and Joe Martin bolted 44 and 23 yards, respectively, for Knight TDs and Maks Babuder connected with Nick Kirian on a nine-yard TD toss.

Durrell Pettaway helped Bowsher (3-3, 1-2) avert a shutout with a nine-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

St. Francis (2-4, 2-1) ran up 286 yards of net total offense, 214 on the ground, while the Rebels had 94 yards rushing and 57 in the air.

Start 21, Rogers 0

Start pitched the first shutout in coach Pat Gucciardo's five years to claim its first league victory of the season, improving to 3-3 overall.

Sophomore Julian Nash had 17 carries for 174 yards, and quarterback Brad Leestma was 13 of 18 for 193 yards, including a pair of touchdown passes to L.J. Jones (five catches, 86 yards).

The Spartans' impressive defensive display comes during the first year of Rob Rose's tenure as defensive coordinator at Start. Rose previously coached at Whitmer for 31 years.

Clay 49, Scott 12

Clay had it going on the ground and in the air in a rout.

The Eagles rolled up 454 yards of offense, led by 141 yards rushing from Nick Tammerine and 188 yards in the air from A.J. Achter. Clay stormed to a 35-6 halftime advantage over the Bulldogs behind two short Tammerine touchdown runs and two touchdown strikes from Achter to Andy Knopp. Achter also added a TD on the ground in the first half.

Tammerine finished with 141 yards on the ground, while Achter was 8-13 for 188 yards. Defensively for Clay, Aaron Kovach had seven tackles, giving him more than 100 on the year.

For Scott, Ed Phillips was 5-of-14 for 86 yards, while Ed Phillips carried 13 times for 51 yards.

Central 21, Libbey 0

The Cowboys played well defensively, but couldn't stop Central from winning its 18th straight game.

Linebacker Greg Hammond got the Irish on the scoreboard with a 26-yard interception return in the second quarter and Donte Johnson added a three-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 halftime lead.

Cedric Bouyer added a 21-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Central (6-0, 3-0) netted 94 yards on the ground and Tyler Kleeberger completed 5 of 11 passes for 72 yards. The Cowboys (0-6, 0-3) added 66 yards rushing to quarterback Tom McGranahan's 27 in the air on 10-of-18 passing.
