Hathaway Brown defeats Perkins in state semifinal
3/16/2007COLUMBUS - Mylan Woods scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half and hit a key jumper late in the game to lead Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown to a 47-39 victory over Sandusky Perkins last night in a Division II state semifinal.
Woods, a second team All-Ohioan, was 7-of-10 from the field, and hit a jump shot in the lane midway through the fourth quarter after the Pirates had cut the Blazers' seven-point lead to one, 34-33.
Alexis Dobbs finished with 13 points for the Blazers (22-4), who will make their first appearance in the state championship tomorrow against Warsaw River View.
Angela Groves, also a second team All-Ohioan, had eight points and 10 rebounds and blocked two straight shots by 6-foot-4 Cierra Bravard as the Blazers pushed their lead back to seven at 40-33 and then put the game away at the foul line.
Bravard, the co-player of the year in Division II, scored 19 points for the No. 8 Pirates. Bravard was 7-of-13 from the field and had eight rebounds for Perkins (21-4).
Trisha Krewson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Emily Lowe had eight points for Perkins, which also was making its first appearance in the state tournament.
Hathaway Brown shot 41 percent from the field (17-of-42) for the game to Perkins' 39 percent (16-of-41).
WARSAW RIVER VIEW 57,
COLUMBUS EASTMOOR 41
Kristin Daugherty scored 30 points to lead defending state champion Warsaw River View to a victory over Columbus Eastmoor in a Division II state semifinal.
Daugherty, the co-player of the year in Division II, was 11-of-17 from the field as the No. 2 Black Bears (25-1) shot 63 percent (12-of-19) from the field in the second half to pull away against the Warriors (19-5). Her younger sister Kari scored 12 points. The two also had 15 of the team's 23 rebounds. Their mother, Caroline Daugherty, was the Division II coach of the year.
Lashawna Thomas scored 18 points and Ayana Dunning, a first team All-Ohioan, scored 15 points and had eight rebounds for Eastmoor, which lost in the state championship two years ago. Thomas was 6-of-13 from the field and Dunning was 6-of-8.
Eastmoor shot 41 percent from the field (14-of-34) to 53 percent (19-of-36) for River View.
CLEVELAND CC 51, VERSAILLES 39
Ohio's Ms. Basketball Jantel Lavender scored 14 points and hit the go-ahead basket midway through the fourth quarter as Cleveland Central Catholic pulled away late to beat Versailles in the Division III state semifinals.
The 6-foot-4 Lavender dominated around the glass, pulling down 14 rebounds and blocking five shots for the No. 3 Ironmen, who advanced to their first state championship.
With the game tied at 34 in the fourth quarter, Lavender hit a jump hook to start the Ironmen (24-1) a six-point run.
Second-team all-Ohioan Justine Raterman, shut down for most of the first half, hit a jumper to pull the 10th-ranked Tigers to within 42-38, but Angela Bryant scored on a jumper and Lavender made two foul shots.
Bryant came off the bench to score 13 points for Central Catholic. Second-team All-Ohioan Candyce Flynn had 10 points.
Raterman finished with 13 points for Versailles, making its third appearance in the state tournament.
DELPHOS ST. JOHN'S 55,
ALBANY ALEXANDER 24
Jeanne Bockey and Brittany Pohlman scored 11 points apiece and Delphos St. John's stifling defense limited Albany Alexander to just eight baskets in beating the Spartans in the Division III state semifinals.
The 24 points were the fewest ever in the Division III semifinals, two points below the 26 scored by Ironton in the 2005 semifinals.
Kim Miller had six points and six rebounds in the first quarter to jump start the Blue Jays, who shot just 18 percent (3-of-17) from the field in the first quarter and had nine points. She finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Bockey and Pohlman led a balanced attack. Alisha Byrne hit three 3-pointers and Zefiryn Bryan added eight points for No. 4 Delphos, a five-time state champion.
The Blue Jays (25-1) held Alexander (24-3) to just 20 percent shooting (8-of-40), outrebounded the Spartans 45-19 and forced 18 turnovers. The Spartans, making their first appearance in the state tournament, once went more than six minutes without scoring.
Amy Smith led Albany with 10 points and Lauren Raines had seven rebounds.
