Sidelines: TC boys tops at Carnival

Toledo Christian s overall depth rose to the occasion Saturday during the Tiffin Carnival cross country invitational.

The Eagles, led by Lance Wood, captured the Division II championship with 148 points. Wood placed 12th with a time of 16:39.35. Matthew Curcio (29th), Joel Curcio (30th), Nathan Wirebaugh (32nd) and Andrew Kelleher (45th) contributed to the victory.

Delta s Nick Thomas won the race with a time of 16:02.20, holding off Gibsonburg s Jordan Kirwen, who came in second at 16:06.95. Lakota s Bryce Tiell was fifth (16:22.95) and Delta s J.D. Wilcox ran seventh (16:26.95).

St. John s Jesuit ran in the invitational on Saturday without lead runner Joe Miller and finished third as a team with 139 points.

The Titans senior missed the race due to an undisclosed nagging injury, which is not expected to cause him to miss running in any other meet, according to St. John s athletic director Brian Miller.

The Titans were led by Kevin Yarnell, who was sixth with a time of 16:01.60, while Chris Madaras placed ninth (16:15.60). Brett Wagner crossed the finish line 11th (16:17.40), Greg Turissini 36th (16:53.25) and Preston Benjamin 77th (17:27.35).

Northview finished ninth, paced by Jacob Barnes in 16th (16:28.45).

In the Division I-B competition, Colin Pettiford of St. Francis earned first place with a time of 16:12.25. His effort helped the Knights run third in the team with 128 points, while Findlay ran fourth (159), Perrysburg ninth (268) and St. John s B team 11th (303).

Liberty-Benton (142) and Ottawa Hills (170) finished third and fifth, respectively, in Division III.

In the Division I-A girls race, Southview s Alixe Korsnack ran 29th to lead the Cougars to a 10th place finish. Bowling Green s Shannon Titus was 10th overall (19:33.35).

Notre Dame s Monica Guisfredi placed ninth (20:21.20) in the Division I-B race to lead a team victory.

Findlay s Alison Leckrone and Brier Sterling finished fourth (19:47.80) and sixth (19:56.40), respectively, while Whitmer s Logan Hamel placed seventh (20:17.40) and Perrysburg s Andrea Alt ran 10th (20:22.95).

In Division II, Defiance s Lauren Fett claimed third (19:07.50).

In Division III, Genoa s Simone Eli captured first place with a time of 20:49.85.

Corey Tucker took over the Woodward basketball program two years ago and turned it into a legitimate competitor in the City League.

The Polar Bears finished with a winning record (11-9) a year ago, including a 7-4 mark in the City League.

That made a recent decision to resign as Woodward s coach and accept a post as assistant men s coach at Owens Community College more difficult than he anticipated.

It was an extremely tough decision, said Tucker, who was 17-24 overall in his short stint at Woodward. I m trying to turn this into a career and this is a good opportunity for me.

A year after leading the Polar Bears to their winning season since 1972, expectations were high.

We ve got a great group of kids coming back this year, especially a great group of seniors, Tucker said.

Patrice Lalor of Notre Dame has verbally committed to continue her basketball career at the University of Dayton next year. The 5-foot-7 senior point guard also considered scholarship offers from Toledo, Bowling Green, Kent State and Ohio, according to Eagles coach Rhett Boyd.

Last season Lalor averaged 13.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.9 steals per game in earning first-team All-City League honors for the third straight season.

She was also a second-team all-district selection in Division I. During her career, Lalor has helped the Eagles to a 46-16 overall record, two CL playoff berths including one league final.

An excessive amount of chemical spray applied to the Otsego football field destroyed, making the surface unplayable.

The accident has forced the Knights to move a junior varsity game and a freshman game to other sites this week.

Otsego s varsity team was already scheduled to play at Woodmore tomorrow, otherwise that game would have been moved to another site.

Otsego athletic director Scott Bernthisel said steps to correct the problem are already in the works. Because most of the grass was destroyed, the field was reseeded.

Bernthisel said he expects the varsity to play at home on Sept. 21 against Eastwood.

The drought is over for Edon.

The Blue Bombers ended a 26-game losing streak with a thrilling 29-28 win over Hicksville last week. Edon had not celebrated a win since a 33-0 victory overWaldron during the sixth week of the 2004 season.

Alex Sonneberger threw three touchdown passes, including two to Adam Wakefield.
