    Southview kept defending league champion Anthony Wayne on guard for much of the Northern Lakes League girls game last night.

    The Cougars actually were ahead of the Generals 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.

    But the Generals, who went undefeated in league play last season, did enough damage in the second quarter and down the stretch to hold off Southview for a 47-43 road victory.

    "We are going to get every team's best game and we know that," AW coach Justin Zemanski said. "We have to practice getting ready for everyone's best game.

    "We have to be consistent. We had a little bit of a down day and we didn't practice well [Thursday] and I thought that is what led to our slow start."

    Allison Papenfuss paced the Generals with 23 points, 17 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

    Papenfuss, a six-foot junior, considers the victory for the Generals (3-0, 2-0) another step toward trying to get better each time out. But she sees plenty of room for improvement.

    "We know we have a target on our backs and we know we need to be ready to come out and play," Papenfuss said. "We've got a lot to work out but at the same time as long as the season is going on we're always going to be working on something.

    "We're always going to be finding something to get better at."

    Jordan Floyd added nine points and five rebounds for AW while Erika Schmidt produced seven points and four steals. The Generals forced the Cougars (1-3, 0-2) into 25 turnovers, including seven during the second quarter when AW outscored Southview 18-9 to take a 27-23 advantage into halftime.

    Jenna Vermilya sank three 3-pointers to lead the Cougars with nine points while Brooke Gates added seven points and a team-high five rebounds. Krissy Rowe, Tiffany Scott and Kaitlin Blankerts scored six points apiece.

    Despite the defeat, the Cougars showed plenty of fight for Southview coach Todd Bostater.

    "We've been struggling a little bit but I thought our execution was better and our intensity was better," Bostater said. "Execution on offense was much better. I think they really hurt us on the boards. They had numerous

    offensive rebounds. We didn't do a real good job of boxing out.

    "But I'm proud of the kids. They battled."

    AW owned the glass, 31-18. Ten of the Generals' rebounds came on the offensive glass.

    Floyd also provided a lift in the second quarter, scoring five of her points during the period. She tied the score at 17 with a 3-pointer with 4:55 remaining in the half. Her second basket came with just over a minute remaining when she scored on a putback to give the Generals a 24-23 advantage. AW never trailed the rest of the night.

    Papenfuss came through in the second half with 13 points and 11 boards to help the Generals go up by as many as 11 points late in the fourth quarter.

    "Papenfuss is outstanding," Bostater said. "She's a tough matchup."

    The Generals were abysmal from the foul line, making only 10 of 34.

    Foul shooting is one area where AW needs work.

    "We just have to capitalize on our opportunities [at the foul line]," Zemanski said. "I'm confident we're going to get that corrected. We'll start working on that first thing in the morning."
