Ottawa Hills finishes sixth in Division III

LOCKBOURNE, Ohio - Ottawa Hills fired a second-round 331 yesterday to finish sixth in the Division III state golf tournament at The Players Club at Foxfire Golf Club.

Sophomore Reed Silverman led the Green Bears, shooting an 80 in the second round to finish 21st with a 163.

Archbold also improved on day two, shooting a 341 to finish in ninth place with a 687.

Senior Steve Kinsman finished 15th after shooting a 161 to lead the Blue Streaks.

Sugarcreek Garaway shot a 312 for a two-day total of 631 to capture its second consecutive and third overall state championship. The Pirates' other title came in 2004, giving the school three state championships in five years.

Garaway was led by senior Kevin Miller, who took home medal honors with a tournament best three-under 69 final round and a two-day total of 141. Miller also was the medalist a year ago, making him the 11th boys golfer in Ohio history to win back-to-back individual championships.

Nathan Tarter, a senior from Mogadore, shot a 144 to come in second, while Lima Central Catholic junior Oliver Holtsberry came in third with a 151.

Hunting Valley University School took home its third-consecutive state title in Division II at the Ohio State University Scarlet course, winning by 20 strokes over Dayton Chaminade-Julienne.

Bryan shot a 683 to finish seventh, followed by Wauseon (718) in 12th place.

Junior Mike Ross was the low scorer for Bryan, finishing with a 169 for a tie for 30th.

Wauseon was led by senior Michael Dietrich, who carded a 177 for a tie for 50th.

Competing as an individual, Port Clinton junior Marcus Hunt finished tied for 27th with a 168.

Chaminade-Julienne senior Sam Jandel earned medalist honors with a two-day total of 145 (73-72). McLaughlin, last year's medalist, tied for second among all golfers with a 152 (78-74) with Apple Creek Waynedale sophomore Grant Weaver (152, 79-73).

The boys Division I championship will be played next weekend.

In its first trip to the state championship, Poland Seminary shot a final-round 333 to win the first Division II girls golf title by one stroke over Tipp City Tippecanoe at the Ohio State University Gray course.

Competing as individuals, Maumee Valley junior Yang Li carded a 150 (76-74) to finish tied for third, while Eastwood junior Alyssa Shimel tied for eighth with a 156 (80-76).

Ariel Witmer took home medal honors with a two-day total of 139 (70-69), a state record. The previous record-low was 140, set by Notre Dame Academy's Heather Zielinski in 1998.
