Sidelines: Maumee Valley junior Li takes third at state golf

Three area girls golfers made strong runs for a state title.

The best finish came in Division II, where junior Yang Li of Maumee Valley finished tied for third with a two-round total of 150. Close behind Li was Eastwood junior Alyssa Shimel, who tied for eighth at 156.

In Division I, Bowling Green senior Caroline Powers, who placed third as a junior, took fifth this year with a 155.

Among the boys, the best local effort came in Division III, where the team from

Ottawa Hills took sixth and Archbold was ninth. The Blue Streaks Steve Kinsman, a senior, was the top local finisher with a 15th-place effort, while sophomore Reed Silverman took 21st to lead the Green Bears.

In Division II, a pair of Northwest Ohio Athletic League teams fared well as Bryan placed seven and Wauseon took 12th. Junior Mike Ross led the Golden Bears, finishing 30th overall.

Findlay was the top area team in Division I, finishing eighth. The Trojans were led by senior Kyle Corbin, who tied for 27th.
