St. John's pair claim doubles crown

PORT CLINTON - Jacob Kuhn and Josef Pontasch of St. John's Jesuit cruised to the doubles championship in Division I district tennis.

Kuhn, a senior, and Pontasch, a junior defeated teammates Connor Majdalani and Gregory Diment 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

In singles, Lexington sophomore Nicky Wong won his second consecutive championship, beating Findlay freshman Chicara Oshima 6-1, 6-1.

The top two in singles and doubles advance to the state tournament in Columbus.

PORT CLINTON - Gabe Costa and Blake Troller of Port Clinton won a second-set tiebreaker to capture the doubles championship in Division II district tennis.

Costa, a senior, and Troller, a junior, defeated Lima Central Catholic juniors Brian Bruin and Brandon French 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the final.

Chris Court and James Mackey of Ottawa Hills took third with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Port Clinton's Paul Carman and Jason Que.

In singles, Elida senior Evan Neuman knocked off Maumee Valley junior Eyad Jaara 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the final.

Ottawa Hills sophomore Evan Bechtel won the third-place match for the second year in a row, beating Mansfield Christian senior Wes Nitzschke 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

The top three in singles and doubles advance to the state tournament in Columbus.
