St. John's defense paves way to win

Turnovers proved costly last night for Start as the Spartans threw four interceptions and had three fumbles as St. John's Jesuit captured a 21-7 City League

victory.

Cheatham Norrils had a pair of touchdown catches for the Titans (3-3, 1-2), hauling in a 19-yard pass from Kent Kern and a 47-yard pass from Zach Leffler. Leffler completed 3-of-3 passes for 59 yards, while Kern also had a three-yard touchdown run.

Deonte Rozier had a one-yard touchdown run for Start (0-6, 0-3). Rob Giles had 106 yards passing for the Spartans and Silas McCall had 53 yards rushing.

Central Catholic 29,

Clay 14

Caleb Goings scored three touchdowns, the first on a one-yard run and the last on a 13-yard jaunt with a 24-yard scoring pass from Dave Wallender in between for Central as it went 5-1, 3-0 in the City League.

The Irish had another offensive highlight as senior Kyle Burkhardt kicked a 57-yard field goal in the first quarter to set a school record. He also added a 41-yard field goal and was perfect on extra points.

Central had a 20-0 lead in the second quarter when Clay rode Josh Utter's passing arm to close to 20-14 at halftime. Utter hit Nick Roman for 40 yards and Bobby Hoffman for 36 yards. Central closed the scoring with nine points in the final period as Levi Pickerl blocked an Eagle point for a safety and Goings' final touchdown finished the scoring.

The loss was the first in the City League for Clay (4-2, 2-1).

Bowsher 28, Waite 6

A good beginning and ending paced the Rebels past the Indians at Waite. Bowsher scored 14 points in both of the first and fourth quarters.

Senior quarterback Brian Shelton paced the Rebels (2-4, 2-1), throwing for 144 yards and one touchdown to Antione Russel. Shelton also scored on a three-yard run.

Dameon Austin and Dijon Tucker both scored on runs for Bowsher.

Kevin Carter was key for the Indians (1-5, 1-2), rushing for 126 yards on 25 attempts and scoring on a 30-yard run.

Rogers 62, Woodward 8

Rogers routed Woodward thanks to a 43-point first quarter and 525 yards of total offense.

In the first quarter, the Rams had six touchdowns. E.J. Tucker had five carries and scored on four of them, racking up 110 yards in the process. He had scoring runs of 34, 44, 13 and 11-yards for the Rams (5-1, 2-1). Darrell James picked up 111 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 48 and 1 yards.

Gary Johnson had a 10 yard run for Rogers in the second quarter. Then in the fourth, Marquis Snider broke free for a 56-yard scoring run and Dominique Jones had a 52-yard touchdown dash.

Giles Allen scored on a one-yard QB keeper for Woodward (0-6, 0-3).

He finished the game 4-for-8 for 86 yards in the air.
