Elmwood sweeps SLL crowns

FREMONT - Elmwood swept the boys and girls titles at the Suburban Lakes League cross country meet yesterday at Walsh Park.

The Royal boys had three runners finish in the top nine on the way to 54 points to claim their second consecutive crown. Eastwood was second with 64, while Gibsonburg was third with 69.

Lake senior Zack Powell won the individual title with a time of 16:12.2, five seconds ahead of defending champ Nick Goebel of Elmwood. Brothers Dexter (17:21) and Wes Lee (17:30) took eighth and ninth, respectively, behind Goebel to power the Royals.

On the girls side, Elmwood was able to overcome Woodmore's one-two punch of juniors Lacy Nagy and Bailey Ulinski to outdistance the Wildcats 36-47.

The Royals, led by senior Darla Heimann in third at 20:32.93, had four runners in the top eight. Woodmore had two, and no other team had more than one.

Nagy defended her individual title with a time of 19:49.23, while Ulinski - who won the 2007 title was running for Eastwood - was second at 20:16.56.

ARCHBOLD - The Delta boys and the Liberty Center girls won the team crowns at the Northwest Ohio Athletic League at the

Archbold Resevoir.

The Panther boys had six runners in the top seven to finish with 18 points and claim their fourth consecutive crown. Archbold was second with 76, one better than Liberty Center.

Junior Colin Fisher led the way for Delta, winning his second consecutive title with a time of 16:41.59. Fisher gave the Panthers their seventh straight individual winner.

On the girls side, Liberty Center knocked off five-time champ Wauseon 35-40 to claim the school's first league crown in cross country. Sophomore Chelsea Knapp finished second with a time of 20:45.76 to lead a Tiger team that had all five scoring runners finish in the top 11.

Wauseon's Marin Baird won the individual title with a time of 20:20.40, giving the Indians the individual champ for the fourth time in five seasons.

The Ottawa Hills boys and the Toledo Christian girls won the team titles at the Toledo Area Athletic Conference meet at Maumee Bay State Park.

The Green Bear boys ended TC's string of six consecutive team titles by placing their five scoring runners in the top six places for 18 points, with the Eagles finishing second with 52 points.

Matt Baron of Ottawa Hills won the individual title with a time of 18:09. Teammate Andy King was second at 18:21.

On the girls side, Toledo Christian won its fourth consecutive team crown with 37 points. Delainey Phelps (20:34) and Krista Wood (20:36) led the way by finishing second and third, respectively, for the Eagles.

Emmanuel Christian's Mackenzie Denner won the individual crown with a time of 20:10.
