Girls basketball: Waite gets by Shaker Heights
12/13/2009The Indians jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the opening quarter as Natasha Howard, Shanice McNeal, and Brooke Hunt combined for 15 points and Waite went on to a 68-49 victory over Shaker Heights in girls basketball.
Howard finished with a game-high 29 for Waite (3-0), while McNeal had 14 and Courtney Jackson added 10.
Khadyah Young scored 16 points to lead Shaker Heights (2-1).
Springfield had a strong second half, outscoring the Panthers 25 to 11. The Blue Devils held Whitmer (0-4) to just three points in the third quarter.
Lauren Roy led Springfield (5-1) with 11 points. Malisa Hoak paced Whitmer with eight points.
Perrysburg led by one point after one quarter before controlling the remainder of the game at home.
Kelsey Newman scored 15 points for the Yellow Jackets, and Erin Mesker chipped in 14. Clay's Meghan Sharer scored seven points.
The host Green Bears used a 20-2 run in the second quarter to break open a tight contest.
Lauren Abendroth scored a game-high 22 points to lead Ottawa Hills (4-0), which had nine different players score.
Kathleen Przeslawski finished with 15 points for Delta (0-7).
LEIPSIC - The visiting Tigers got 17 points each from Hannah Stevens and Lauren Bates to remain unbeaten on the season at 6-0.
Sisters Chelsea and Emily Gerten finished with 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Vikings (0-4).
McCOMB - The Musketeers outscored the home school 18-8 in the second quarter and held on for the win.
Shelby Wilson scored 14 to lead the Panthers (3-2), while Devyn Wilson and Jackie Leppelmeier each added 10.
Katie Von Lehden and Leah Kimmet finished with 17 and 16, respectively, for Fort Jennings.
GIBSONBURG - New Riegel was off and running in the first quarter by racking up 24 points to 8 for Gibsonburg (1-3). Taylor Mathias paced the New Riegel (4-0) attack with 26 points, Brooke Scherger added 12, and Paula Kelbley 11.
Aubrey Goetz paced Gibsonburg with 14. Both teams had 19 field goals, but Gibsonburg was outscored at the free-throw line 16 to 2.
KANSAS - Freshman Miranda Palmer scored 13 points and Kendal Moses added 11 to lead the Redskins to the road win.
Amy Gosche had 11 points to lead the Raiders.
OAK HARBOR - The Rockets used a 21-5 second-quarter scoring advantage to claim their first win of the year.
Sara Lipstraw scored 17 while Kayla Diefenthaler added 16 for Oak Harbor (1-3, 1-1). Bethany Buchanan had 10 for Port Clinton (0-4, 0-2).
