The high school baseball season has yet to hit April, but defending league champions Southview and host Clay already staged a meaningful match-up in their season-opener yesterday.

When Southview senior right-hander Kirk Stambaugh left the mound last June, he was finishing off a 7-0 season with a 2-0 shutout of Anthony Wayne, a win that gave the Cougars a Northern Lakes League title.

Stambaugh picked up yesterday right where he left off, blanking the Eagles through five innings as Southview took a 6-1 victory over Clay, the 2009 City League champion.

“It felt good to get out there,” Stambaugh said. “It was a great day. We were both defending champs from our leagues. I'm really excited. I worked hard in the offseason, and so did a lot of the other guys. We were looking forward to it.”
