State wrestling champ Martinez enrolls at Clay

One of the best high school wrestlers in the nation has moved back to the area from southern Ohio.

Clay coach Gerry Anthony confirmed yesterday that sophomore two-time state champion Felipe Martinez is enrolled at the school and began attending classes Wednesday.

Martinez, who lived in Genoa during his younger years, comes by way of St. Paris Graham, this past season's top ranked team nationally.

In March, Martinez won the Division II 140-pound state title, concluding his season at 38-0 and helping the Falcons to their 10th consecutive team state championship.

Martinez, who has earned a two-year record of 83-2, is ranked No. 6 nationally at his weight by the Web site Intermat.

Anthony said Martinez' decision to transfer was based on personal reasons.

"We're pretty excited," Anthony said.

"He's a great kid, a good student, and a good wrestler. He'll fit in nicely."

Anthony is unsure what weight Martinez will fill in a lineup that includes nine other returning district qualifiers - including two individuals who advanced to state - from a team that won its second straight City League championship and finished fourth at a Division I district.

"I really don't know," Anthony said.

"I don't know how much he weighs."

Clay has never produced an individual state champion.

Martinez was a prolific youth wrestler competing for the East Toledo Wrestling Club. His numerous accomplishments include winning three junior high state championships.
