The race for the Northern Lakes League baseball championship is still wide open after Perrysburg's 4-1 road win over Southview yesterday.

Alec Schmenk (5-0) picked up his second complete game victory over the Cougars after last month's

2-1 win over Southview.

Yesterday, Schmenk needed just 78 pitches to stifle the Cougars and help the Yellow Jackets (19-3, 8-2 NLL) keep pace with Southview (18-3, 10-2) in the league standings.

Freshman Steve Slocomb's RBI single in the first gave Perrysburg an early 1-0 lead, and Zach Kolvey broke things open with a two-run homer off Southview starter Kirk Stambaugh (8-1) in the third for a 3-0 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on another run in the sixth before Southview threatened in the bottom half. The Cougars brought a run across after a few Perrysburg miscues and had the bases loaded before Schmenk wiggled out of trouble.

Schmenk finished with three strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

"Alec took charge right from the beginning and pitched very well," Perrysburg coach Dave Hall said. "This was just a good high school baseball game, as it was last time when we faced them."
