Start High School basketball coach Gil Guerrero watched film on the John Hay Hornets from the Senate Athletic League in Cleveland, but he didn't see Devin Carter, a 6-foot-2 sharp-shooting guard, and the object of college basketball recruiters as a junior.

Carter scored 17 points to lead the Hornets to a 66-46 victory over Start in the third game of The Blade Basketball Classic Monday.

"I don't remember seeing him in the film I watched [against Lutheran East]."

Carter didn't play in that game. He made up for lost time, hitting two 3-pointers and 10 points in the first quarter for Hay's 19-13 lead.

The Hornets, 4-1 on the season, were one of the most impressive teams in the Classic, opening a 37-24 halftime lead while cruising to a 51-32 third-quarter advantage.

"We stayed put on offense, spread the floor, and our players found the open man," said John Hay coach Chris Sanders. "We try to teach them to read, recognize, and react to various situations. We did a good job today."

Joe Estrict added 13 points for the Hornets.

"Credit to Hay, obviously, they played a terrific game," Guerrero said. "We played like we haven't practiced and made a lot of mistakes."

Chris Lawson, Maurice Taylor, and Scott Hicks each scored 10 points to lead the Spartans, now 4-2 on the season.
