AW wins first NLL girls tennis crown

Northview’s Miller wins singles title

BOWLING GREEN — Anthony Wayne won its first Northern Lakes League girls tennis title in school history Wednesday as the Generals edged Perrysburg by one point.

Junior Joie Hoeflinger captured the individual NLL title at No. 3 singles for AW, while sophomores McKenzie Krieg and Madie Smith teamed up to win the title at No. 2 doubles.

“It was a great day for Anthony Wayne,” first-year coach Steve Robinson said. “It took everything to fall into place. We had to have all our people score points for us. So it felt really good.”

Anthony Wayne ended the reign of Perrysburg, which had won eight straight NLL titles at Bowling Green State University’s Keefe Courts.

The Generals finished with 34 points and the Yellow Jackets had 33. Napoleon, playing in its first NLL tournament, finished third with 28, followed by Northview (25) and Bowling Green (20).

Northview sophomore Megan Miller successfully defended her No. 1 singles title with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Southview’s Jenna Haidar.

The league team champion is determined by a combination of tournament points and dual meet points. Anthony Wayne entered the NLL tournament with a 5-2 dual meet record, while Perrysburg was 6-1. Each team gets two points for a dual meet win. The Generals won the tournament by one point and the overall title by one.

Also scoring crucial points for Anthony Wayne was Sarah Jankowski, who took third place at second singles, and seniors Meghan Draheim and Paige Kuck who placed fourth in No. 2 doubles.

“It all happened in a quick manner,” Robinson said. “It went down to our No. 2 doubles team. We had to have that. We had parents and everyone celebrating. We got congratulations from a lot of other schools.”

AW senior Courtney Kreig also came through with key points with a fifth place in first singles.

Perrysburg’s Carmen Alkire won the title at No. 2 singles, defeating Cassadie Baker of Bowling Green, 6-4, 6-1.

Napoleon’s team of Addie Small and Rachel Niermann captured the title at No. 1 doubles.
