Archbold tops Delta to win Division III title

Blue Streaks, Panthers each have two champions; Clay takes 2nd in D-I; Wauseon D-II runner-up

At Owens Community College, the Archbold Blue Streaks outpointed Northwest Ohio Athletic League rival Delta 115-96 for the team championship Saturday at the Division III district wrestling tournament.

Northern Buckeye Conference champion Elmwood placed third in the standings, one point behind Delta, and Genoa finished in seventh place at 61 points.

Archbold got individual championships from Jordan Cowell (152 pounds) and Austin Ripke (160), and the Streaks' Drew Coffey (106) and Travis Jaramillo (195) were each runners-up.

Delta and Elmwood also will each send four wrestlers to state.

For the Panthers, Kyle Keller (106) and Luke Kern (138) each picked up titles, Tyler Fahrer (145) placed second, and Jared Mattin (152) took third.

Dexter Lee (113) was Elmwood's lone champion, Royals teammates Dustin Ferguson (120) and Jake Baker (220) each placed third, and Mitchell Emmitt was fourth at 145.

Swanton's Mimmo Lytle, the defending state champion at 285 pounds, edged Liberty Center's Justin Gillen in the title match at that weight.

Gillen's teammate, Zach Niner won the title at 132 pounds, and Genoa's Jake Sheehy was victorious at 182.

The top four wrestlers advance to the state meet which will be held Thursday through Saturday at Value City Arena in Columbus.

Eagles D-I runner-up, send 7 to state meet

ASHLAND -- Three Rivers Athletic Conference champion Clay placed second in the team standings Saturday behind perennial Ohio and national power Lakewood St. Edward in the Division I district wrestling tournament at Ashland University.

St. Edward, which has won 26 state championships, including 13 of the last 14, totaled 344 points. Clay's Eagles were next at 164.

Perrysburg (seventh) and Fremont Ross (10th) also finished among the top 10.

The Eagles will send seven wrestlers to D-I state tournament.

Clay's state qualifiers include three runners-up -- Jacob Conine at 132 pounds, Angelo Amenta at 138, and Garrett Gray at 285.

Brothers Richie Screptock (113) and Mike Screptock (126) each placed third, and Jared Davis (106) and Jared Gray (220) were both fourth for the Eagles.

Other area wrestlers reaching the state field included two runners-up from Perrysburg -- Luke Boff (182) and Micah Carter (195). Their teammate, Ryan Roth, also advanced.

St. John's Jesuit wrestler Ted Schoen placed third at 195, Michael Irvine of St. Francis was third at 106, and Maumee's Rocco Caywood also advanced to Columbus at 170 pounds, placing third.

Indians have 2 champions; Central sends 5 to state

MARION -- Wauseon's Indians, who recently won their third straight Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestling title, placed second to perennial state power St. Paris Graham Saturday in the Division II district tournament at Marion Harding.

Graham, which has won 11 straight D-II state championships and 13 overall, easily outdistanced the field by winning eight of the 14 weight divisions en route to 242 points.

Wauseon was next at 112, Clyde placed third at 106, Central Catholic was sixth, and Oak Harbor finished eighth in the team standings.

Wauseon's Dalton Nicely won the 138-pound championship, taking a 6-5 decision over Cameron Campbell of Sandusky Perkins, and his Indians teammate, Zane Krall, captured the title at 220, scoring a 12-4 major decision over Clyde's Billy Ward.

A third state qualifier for Wauseon was Wade Hodges, who placed third at 113.

Central, which had two runners-up, will send five to state.

Nate Hagan defaulted in the 120 final, and teammate Levi Pickerel lost in the 285 title match. Other Irish qualifiers were Alex Mossing (third, 132), Matt Pool (fourth, 106) and Sam Viengmany (fourth, 145).

Eastwood's Kyle Patterson placed fourth at 182, Oak Harbor got a third from Jared Chambers (160) and fourths from Luke Cramer (138) and Alex Bergman (152).

Bryan's Shelden Struble advanced to state by placing third at 138 pounds.
